Mexican President Announces Plans to Legalize Cannabis

Summary and opinion by Wendy Anderson.

This week Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto announced that he will be sending a bill into congress to increase the amount of cannabis people can carry from the current amount of 5 grams to 28 grams or 1 ounce.

He had previously been against the legalizing of marijuana, however with the failing war on drugs causing the death of ten of thousands of people, it seems he’s taking a different stance.

President Pena Nieto was not originally planning on attending the United Nations meeting on drug policy in New York, but changed his mind last minute.

He said that cannabis use should be seen as a public health issue and stressed that proposed bill would not be completely legalizing it, rather it would be for medical purposes.
We are seeing some great activity as Uruguay became the first country in the world to fully legalize cannabis to grow, sell, and consume in 2013. Canada just put in their proposal to legalize by 2017 and the United States is making steps state by state.
