Always an avid proponent of the legalization of all drugs, Richard Branson has said that if only one drug, such as marijuana, were to be legalized then law enforcement officials would turn their attention to another drug. This, in turn, would fill prisons to maximum capacity, and the focus on minimizing addiction would also be lost as a result. Therefore, it comes as no surprise the Mr. Branson leaked a plan by the UN that would “unify world governments in the legalization of all drugs, and treat addicts like sick people, not criminals,” according to an independent.uk report.
Branson has reportedly broken a media embargo on a report from the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) that demonstrates a marketed shift in the organization’s stance on legalization and addiction. Writing on his Virgin Mobile website, Branson said that the UN report declares that “criminalization is harmful unnecessary and disproportionate.” He added in his own words that “the war on drugs has done too much damage to too many people already.”
