9 Benefits and Uses of CBD

April 05, 2021

CBD (cannabidiol) is a chemical compound extracted from the cannabis plant for medicinal purposes. It’s non-psychoactive, meaning you won't get high when you take it. It’s also perfectly legal by federal law in all 50 states and is non-addictive. CBD can be used for many different purposes, including pain relief, reducing anxiety and depression, improving sleeping quality and more. People use CBD for all sorts of ailments without the side effects that come with prescriptions or other treatments.

It can even improve the life quality of our cats or dogs. CBD for pets is becoming increasingly popular; while you are munching on a CBD gummy, your four-legged friend could be chewing on a CBD snack. While there is still plenty of ongoing research on the effects of CBD so far, there is no sign of it having any serious side effects on either humans or pets.

The following are 10 ways that people use cannabidiol.

1. Pain Relief

CBD can be used for pain relief in humans and animals. It works by activating the endocannabinoid system and interacting with its receptors. CBD is non-toxic, so you don’t have to worry about it being dangerous to take. It is not addictive either. Studies show that CBD may be useful for treating chronic pain, acute pain, neuropathic pain, cancer-related pain and more.

2. Reduce Anxiety & Depression

CBD can also reduce anxiety and depression. Like the endocannabinoid system, the serotonin receptors in our brain play a crucial role in controlling mood and anxiety. These receptors are activated by CBD as well as serotonin. Given that CBD works on both systems, it means it can help keep you calm and collected when you need it most – whether it’s a test day or public speaking event.

3. Improve Sleep Quality

CBD might also improve your sleeping quality. This is because it interacts with adenosine receptors in the body, which reduces the activity of these receptors (adenosine is responsible for keeping us awake).

4. Treat Seizures

CBD can also be used to treat seizures. Seizures are caused by overactive neurons in the brain. CBD stimulates the 5-HT1A serotonin receptors, which help prevent overactivity of these neurons and therefore reduce the occurrence of seizures. The studies are still ongoing, but many people swear by CBD as a treatment for seizures in children with severe epilepsy.

5. Relieve Nausea & Vomiting

CBD can also be used to relieve nausea and vomiting. A study published in Neurogastroenterology & Motility found that cannabidiol effectively relieves nausea and vomiting in rats and could be used to treat nausea and vomiting in humans as well. Another study published in Current Drug Safety found that CBD could be used to prevent nausea and vomiting associated with chemotherapy treatment in human patients too.

6. Treat Inflammation

Inflammation is another condition that CBD can treat. The same study found that cannabidiol helps relieve inflammation in rats by blocking TNF-alpha – a protein involved in an immune response that causes inflammation. Another study found that CBD prevents an inflammatory response in intestinal cells too. It is even reported to slow down the progression of Alzheimer’s disease by preventing neuroinflammation, which is at the root of this disease’s progress.

7. Aid with Severe Epilepsy

Finally, CBD can also be used to treat severe epileptic seizures in children. This use was only recently legalized in states like Georgia, Alabama, Florida and Texas, which all have very strict laws on cannabis use. CBD oil can only be used legally if it has less than 0.3% THC content – THC is the component that makes you high when you take cannabis products. However, there are no reports of anyone getting high from taking cannabis oil products containing CBD, meaning it is safe for children to take.

8. Improve Diabetes

There are also studies that show CBD might help improve diabetes. A study published in the British Journal of Pharmacology found that CBD helped lower the blood glucose levels in rats with type-2 diabetes, while another study found that obese mice treated with CBD for a week had reduced blood sugar levels. A third study found evidence that CBD helps block an enzyme called 11-beta HSD-1, which is thought to be involved in the development of type 2 diabetes.

9. Reduce Seizures in Dogs & Cats

CBD can also be used to treat seizures in dogs and cats. The same British Journal of Pharmacology study found that CBD could be helpful in treating seizures in animals too. This is despite the fact that the endocannabinoid system in dogs and cats plays a completely different role from the one found in humans. However, this study suggested that CBD could still be used to treat seizures in these animals and might even have a positive impact on their quality of life.

CBD can also help improve the quality of life for pets with cancer. A study published in Canine Practice found that giving dogs with cancer CBD improved their quality of life by reducing anxiety and depression, improving sleep quality and more. Another study found that CBD significantly decreased tumor growth rates in mice with colorectal cancer. It is not clear whether it will work for other types of cancer, but more studies are being conducted to better understand the effects of CBD for pets
