The term 420 originated from April 20, 1971 when five high school students (in a group named the ‘Waldos’) in San Rafael, California decided to use ‘4:20’ with the intentions to search for an abandoned cannabis crop on a treasure map.
Some people say the treasure map was created by the plant’s owner himself. After school, the group would meet up at the Louis Pasteur statue outside at 4:20 P.M., which coined the term 4:20. It was originally called 4:20-Louis, but changed to 4:20, which is more catchy.
